ENTERTAINMENT FUNCTION VENUE HIRE

FRIENDS OF THE RAIL:

The club was started in 1986 by a group of local Pretoria-based railway enthusiasts, who were Railway Society of Southern Africa members. The problems of traveling to Johannesburg to attend the RSSA meetings and events, and the steam activities still happening in the Pretoria area prompted the formation of the Association.

Our current status

We are an established section 21 Association, run by a Board of Directors and a group of willing members who tackle jobs, both large and small, to keep our heritage trains running. Friends of the Rail is preserving railway heritage for the enjoyment of future generations.

If you would like to know more about our activities, you can contact us on the numbers above, or send us an email message.

CORPORATE/SOCIAL FUNCTIONS:

If you have a social group looking for a day out,or organising a function, we can organize the hire of a private train, or private hire of coaches on one of our regular trains, at special discount prices - we can even arrange catering and other useful facilities at a variety of different destinations.

TO JOIN:

There is always lots of fun to be had and future generations will have you to thank for helping in the preservation effort. Join our Association and play a part in keeping the dream alive.

There are so many aspects of this hobby that you can fit in anywhere. Use your talents where best possible - or learn new ones! You will also make lots of new friends and get to meet hundreds more as people come to ride the trains of yesteryear.

DIRECTIONS:

Please note that FOTR trains usually depart from FOTR's own CAPITAL PARK Depot which is located just behind (north of) the ROVOS RAIL Station.

Unless otherwise advised, FOTR trains DO NOT leave from the Pretoria main station, so do not go there. Please DO NOT CONFUSE the FOTR Depot with either the Metrorail Capital Park station or the Spoornet Capital Park goods yards.

Capital Park is a suburb located about 4 kms directly north of the Pretoria city centre, on the old great north main road (Paul Kruger St -- now numbered as R101). The railway depots are about 1 km north of the suburb itself. FOTR's depot was at one time the main locomotive depot and the home of most steam locomotives operating in and around Pretoria.

The entrance to the FOTR Capital Park depot is just east, off Paul Kruger Street.

If coming from the South and city centre, take PAUL KRUGER Street (R101 north) past the Zoo and over the hill . Once over the hill, go through three sets of traffic lights, viz MALHERBE, FLOWERS & TROUW Streets.

Move to the LEFT lane. You will go under a railway bridge and IMMEDIATELY after it you will see a sign on the left for ‘Rovos Rail’ and ‘Capital Park’. Turn off LEFT into a slip road which curves round to a set of traffic lights allowing you to cross Paul Kruger St and enter the Capital Park depots.

Look out for FOTR pointer signs from this point.

If coming from the North, travel south on PAUL KRUGER (R101 south) until you pass under the first railway bridge. Almost IMMEDIATELY after the bridge, shortly before a set of lights, turn off LEFT onto the slip road (signposted Rovos Rail) that leads to the entrance to the Capital Park depots.

Look out for FOTR pointer signs from this point.

Once across Paul Kruger Street, you will go past a disused gatehouse and then a row of storage garages. At the next STOP sign, you will see the 'Rovos Rail' station on your left, behind a green palisade fence.

Turn LEFT through the Rovos Rail gate, onto the gravel towards the station and then KEEP LEFT where you will see a dirt roadway that passes alongside the station over the railway lines. Follow this road across another set of lines and carry on until you arrive at our water tower.
